Enjoying a Sand Bath
A Speckled Mousebird, Colius striatus, is taking a sand bath in a shallow pit on the ground of the Succulent Plant Garden in the Nairobi Museum. This spot is regularly visited by many other individuals as well, serving as a "public bathhouse".
Birds can't be too meticulous in taking care of their feathers, for their lives depend on them. A bird would take a bath every day if possible, just as most of the waterbirds do. In this case, a sand bath may not necessarily make the bird "cleaner", but it can help with dislodging parasites and dandruff, thus improve the condition of the bird's aero-suit.
