Taking Off
After drying its wings, a Great Cormorant, Phalacrocorax carbo, took off from its perch and plunge again into the water. Cormorants have to dry their wings from time to time when they go fishing, because their feathers, unlike those of ducks and geese, are not waterproof. Usually drenched to the skin after a few dives, they can easily get chilled if they don't get out of water. This photo was taken from a moving boat on Lake Naivasha, Kenya, during the Nature Kenya waterfowl counts.
